Before I start writing this, I need to clarify: I AM A BIG RON ROENICKE FAN! I think what he has brought to the Brewers' organization has been fun, exciting, and something long over-due. However, after a 2-8 start to this 2013 season, 2 shut-outs in the last 2 days (10-0 score overall), below average pitching from the bullpen, and a closer that is everything but, I cannot help but wonder whether or not Mr. Roenicke is getting close to, or already on, the dreaded hot seat.
I think it's fair to point out that when a ball club starts out in that manner, 9 times out of 10, the manager is let go soon thereafter. Do I agree with that way of business? No. I think a manager/coach/GM should be allowed to try and finish what they started. No matter how bad a team starts, I think they should be allowed to finish out the season. However, I know the thinking of team leadership is always "it could get better, let's make a change." I don't think the Brewers brass thinks that way, but I think we've all been proven wrong in life at one time or another.
Personally, I think he should be given more time. He has been managing a team that has been riddled with injuries at key positions--Hart, Braun, Ramirez, Gonzalez (again!), and others. I also don't think 10 games can ruin a season, and also think it's not enough time to get a true grasp on what kind of team you have. From what I've read and heard, it seems as though the players respect Roenicke as a manager, and I think it would be a big morale hit should be be removed.
I hope he sticks around. I don't think he's the issue with Brewers' baseball.

I don't have a problem with RonRon either until today's game. In the 8th inning he brought in the new by default closer Jim Henderson. At the time the team was trailing by only 1. I get he wanted to keep the score close, but what if, just what if, the Brewers score a run or two in the top half of the 9th. Now what happens. Luckily they scored, and Kintzler held. I don't understand that managerial move however.
ReplyDeleteMy only complaint is that he sticks to something or a player WAY too long. John Axford as the closer last year and even this year. After his first blown save this year, I would have moved him out of that position. Rickie Weeks in the cleanup spot? I get the injuries but the guy is 0 for his last 20 something in that position in the order. Put someone in there that can atleast make contact with the ball.
I agree first reaction is to fire someone and that isn't the answer (Lucroy just hit a homerun as I was typing this. But, this team can't hit the ball consistently. If this team needs some shaking up, fire the hitting coach. Whatever, he's preaching, this team isn't listening.
Thanks for giving me a venue for venting!
